J005161 CASED 1894-1895 SINO-JAPANESE WAR MEDAL. The 30mm diameter, darkened bronze medal (struck from captured Chinese cannons) features, to its obverse, two crossed Rising Sun flags (for the Army and Navy) beneath a sixteen-petaled Imperial Chrysanthemum. Kanji characters are embossed to its reverse, those to the center reading "War Medal," while those arching over that read (from right to left) "Meiji era 27th-28th Years" (1894-1895). This medal, established in October of 1895, commemorates the conflict between Japan and China, during the aforementioned dates, for the control of Korea. A swiveling hanger is connected to its top, which is itself then connected to a swiveling horizontal bar, through which the ribbon is looped. The 38mm wide, watered silk ribbon has three equal vertical stripes to it, in blue-green, white, and blue-green. An elongated, vertical alloy hook is to its top, which folds down and mates with an alloy eye sewn near the base of its reverse. The ribbon exhibits moderate to heavy age soiling, although the medal itself is only lightly age soiled. They are nested into corresponding depressions to the red velvet interior base of its original presentation case, whose interior lid is lined in padded, red silk. The exterior of the 55mm x 106mm x 22mm, black lacquered wooden case has a hinged alloy closure device and corresponding stud is to its forward edge, and a wide metal hinge is along its rear edge. As was typical with these awards, its cover is unmarked. Nice example.
