J001977 BELT OF 1000 STITCHES.

BACKGROUND: "Senninbari," literally "thousand-person-stitches," but more commonly translated as a "thousand-stitch-belt," were made by the women of Japanese soldiers as a charm to protect their men in combat. These belts had one thousand red knots stitched into them, each one having been gathered from a passerby, with every one of these knots representing a bullet that the wearer would be spared from.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This example is made of dual-ply linen, approximately 110cm long and 19cm wide. Hidden inside the belt is the "stitched" image of a tiger. Also there are coins stitched to the interior of the belt. The tie-strings have been removed, indicating it was most likely removed from the battle field. Wonderful example.
