G019366 M18 EAR CUT-OUT HELMET.
(Stahlhelm M18)BACKGROUND: It is estimated that Germany had produced about 8,000,000 steel helmets by the end of the war in Nov of 1918. The M18 ear cut-out, being the last of the wartime modifications. The helmet was introduced in the summer of 1918 in an attempt to relieve the difficulty in hearing that was being observed with the wear of the M16 and regular M18 helmets. The ear cut-out version was produced in very limited quantities during the war.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Original field grey paint is mostly worn off with a nice even darkened age patina over the exterior surface. All three liner retaining rivets and both ventilation side lugs intact. Subtle half moon shaped ear cut-outs to both sides of helmet apron. Can’t see the makers mark do to rusting on the inside apron, but these where all ET64's. (Eisen-und Hüttenwerke, AG Thale/Harz). Original M18 metal liner band complete All three of the leather liner pads are complete. Pads have the typical "pillows" Complete with it original M18 chinstrap, attached directly to the liner band. Nice complete, salty, worn example.
