G007481 CLOSE COMBAT/TRENCH KNIFE. (Nahkampfmesser)

BACKGROUND: The standard issue bayonets of WWI were found by most troops to be too long and heavy to make a good combat knife, which resulted, in 1915, in the development of smaller, lighter edged weapons for use in hand-to-hand fighting. The close combat or trench knife saw widespread use during WWI, and came in both ordnance issue and private purchase, with numerous variations.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A trench knife with its original metal scabbard and integral, leather belt loop. The 14.5cm blade is in nice clean untouched condition. The natural wooden grips are secured to the blade tang by three small, flat headed, flush rivets. Nine diagonally-angled grooves are incised to either side, and the grip outline follows the contours of the tang. Leather washer has been added to the blade, looks period done. Scabbard is complete with its original leather belt hanger. Very nice example.
