G004670 WWII HUNGARIAN ARTILLERY CAPTAINíS TUNIC.

BACKGROUND: At the end of WWI the treaty of Trianon forced Hungary to cede large parcels of land to the allies. German conquests over, Czechoslovakia, Rumania and Yugoslavia, all saw parcels of land annexed to Hungary, assuring her allegiance to Germany. In November 1940 Hungary signed the Tripartite Pact with Germany, and in June 1941 the Hungarian Army (Honved) officially entered the war as an axis power. Although adopting a new colour, khaki, in 1922 the Hungarians retained the old Austro-Hungarian traditional pattern uniforms.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A khaki wool tunic featuring a five brass button front closure with single metal hook and eye at the neck with "turnover" collar. Four pleated, patch pockets all have scalloped button down flaps. Each collar point has three, six pointed gilt alloy stars on the scarlet red wool collar patches that are trimmed with narrow gold bullion braid that represent the rank of Captain within the Artillery. The gilt shoulder straps appear to have been added afterward and do not appear to be original to the tunic as the green backings indicate Infantry. The interior is partially lined in rayon/silk in a quilted pattern, with the sleeves lined in a pin stripe cotton. The chest measures approximately 34".
