G003981 M1914 TENT SQUARE. (Zeltbahn)
BACKGROUND: First introduced in 1892 in a brown color. It was decided in 1914 to change the color to Feldgrau to make it less visible on the battle field. As it ended up, there were such large quantities of the M1892 in the field that it was never phased out of service. Both models were used side by side until the end of the war. Typically they were used to make tents or to cover field equipment. Many of these could be buttoned together to make any size tent that was needed.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Quadrangular M1914 example in grey waterproof cotton. 165cm x 165cm. The basic square consists of two piece sewn together down the center. All fours sides (on both side) have 8 buttons on each with the appropriate matching button holes. Looks to have most of the original buttons and stitching. Overall condition is superb showing only some light aging and a few minor stains. Marker mark to one corner and dated for 1915. Early war examples are very hard to find. Nice!
