G014461 M1895 SAXON EM/NCO'S BELT BUCKLE. (Koppelschloß)

BACKGROUND: Allied with the unsuccessful Austrian army, in the war of 1866 against Prussia over the disputed Duchies of Schleswig and Holstein, the Kingdom of Saxony was defeated and occupied within a few days. The resulting peace treaty between the Prussian and Saxony, signed on October 21ST 1866, resulted in a certain amount of independence for the small kingdom but required it to join the newly formed North German Confederation. In February 1867 the eight Saxon Infantry regiments were formally integrated into the Prussian Army. This integration also brought about a change in uniforms from the distinctive green and blue Saxon uniforms to the Prussian style uniforms. The Kingdom of Saxony’s ruling Wettin family retained the right to maintain their motto on the Saxon EM/NCO’s belt buckles.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 1895 pattern Saxon belt buckle in brass with a separate face plate. The 47mm x 66mm, slightly convex, stamped brass box buckle, features, against its plain, obverse field, a crown to its domed center, encompassed by a dual rope-like border within which, against a ribbed background, is "Providentiae Memor", (Mindful of Providence), to top. Laurel leaf cluster and script are on a ribbed background and encircled by inner and outer simulated twisted rope borders. To the reverse is its slotted buckle catch, and a metal prong bar with dual prongs, for the belt’s retaining tongue. The buckle has a faint, illegible makers mark.
