H062677 DOG TAG CARRYING POUCH. (Erkennungsmarken Tasche)

BACKGROUND: On mobilization of the German Armed Forces in August 1939 all personnel were issued an identification, (dog), tag to be worn on a cord around the neck. Following the outbreak of WWII all new recruits were issued a dog tag on their registration for military service. If killed or wounded half of the dog tag would stay attached to the individual and the other half would be sent to the appropriate administrative offices for processing. The dog tag pouch was a private purchase item that proved quite popular with the troops as it kept the potentially cold metal disc from coming in contact with the skin when worn.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A grey, soft kid leather, pouch with carrying string. There is a small metal snap in place to keep the flap secure. All seams are strong, but there is a small piece cut to the front, right side. Nice worn and used example.
