H049581 BINOCULAR BUTTONING FLAP. (Anknöpflasche für Doppelfernrohr)

BACKGROUND: The German army used a wide variety of optical enhancement items with the 6 x 30 power, (6 power magnification with a 30mm diameter objective lens), binoculars being the standard issue optics utilized by all branches of service. Although the 6 x 30 power binoculars were the standard issue, specialized personnel such as Artillery observers, Reconnaissance personnel, Searchlight personnel, etc., required stronger optics and assorted larger power binoculars were issued to these specialized personnel on a limited basis. When issued the binoculars came with a variety of accessories which included protective lens covers and a buttoning flap. The buttoning flap was designed to secure the binoculars to a tunic button when the user was on the move.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A brown leather construction binocular buttoning flap features a tear dropped shaped panel to one end with a central cut-out slash and a smaller slash to each outside edge. The tear drop panel has two narrow, extended "arms" with a central "U" shaped cut-out and a small slash to the end of each. The extended arms were designed to folded back to the tear drop panel and secured around the central joining bracket of the binoculars by two small studs that would be inserted through the slashes on the ends of the arms and the tear drop panel. The original metal studs are included. The central slash on the tear drop panel was intended to be secured to a tunic button.
