BACKGROUND: With the reintroduction of conscription in 1935, the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, (High Command of the Armed Forces), activated the Wehrersatzdienststelle, (Recruiting Offices), throughout Germany to process and administer the call up procedure. Personnel serving with the Wehrersatzdienststelle wore a distinctive designation on their shoulder straps/boards as identifying insignia.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Early, (Circa November 1938-May 1940), second pattern, blue/green badge cloth construction, slip on shoulder straps with bright silver/aluminum diamond pattern NCO’s tress to all the outside edges, a single, silver washed, stamped alloy rank pip, the stamped natural aluminum, September 10TH 1935 Wehrmacht pattern, "W" cypher and "XVII" and green wool waffenfarbe piping.
