BACKGROUND: The standard issue, summer underwear set consisted of natural, off-white, cotton mesh net shorts and a short sleeve crew neck T-shirt. The nature of the mesh net made both the shorts and shirt quite "stretchy" enabling them to fit a variety of different sizes. This pattern of underwear was issued to all EM/NCO’s primarily for summer usage but personnel serving in especially cold climates could retain the underwear set and be supplemented with the winter long underwear set in the winter months. The summer issue underwear was worn next to the body with the winter issue underwear set worn over top resulting in excellent heat retention. Of Note: Officers and certain senior NCO ranks were responsible for purchasing their own uniform items and as a result were allotted a clothing allowance through the army’s Kleiderkasse, (Clothing Account), system. The Officers and certain senior NCO’s could choose to purchase their uniform items from the armed forces clothing depots or to privately purchase garments of higher quality. Although enlisted personnel were issued their uniforms from government supplies they were also permitted to purchase privately tailored uniform items although the price may have been restrictive.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Standard Army issue shorts issued through and Org Todt depot. All complete and nice condition. Roughly a 38" waist.
