BACKGROUND: "Die Wehrmacht", (The Armed Forces), magazine was originally founded in October 1935 as the, "Das Ehrenkreuz", (The Honor Cross), magazine published in Berlin by Brunnen Verlag under the auspices of the OKW, Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, (High Command of the Armed Forces), as the official magazine of the German Armed Forces. In October 1936 it was decided to rename the magazine, Die Wehrmacht with the first copy being issued on November 6TH 1936. The renaming of the magazine also brought about some reorganization with its own new publisher Verlag Die Wehrmacht and control of the magazine was passed to the Reichskriegsministerium, (National War Ministry). Die Wehrmacht was published twice a month up until the fall of 1944 with roughly two hundred different issues and at least five special issues being produced. Die Wehrmacht was distributed in eighteen different countries besides Germany including, Holland, Denmark, Belgium, France, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, Slovakia, Italy, Greece, Spain and Portugal, but was only produced in the German language unlike its counterparts as Der Adler, and Signal magazines. Of Note: Although most issues of Die Wehrmacht have the printed phrase, "Erscheint vierzehntäglich", (Appears/Issued every fourteen days), we have had numerous issues with dates of only seven days apart.
