H013185 MEDICAL OBERARZT'S M36 SERVICE TUNIC & VISOR CAP. (Dienstrock für Offizier)

BACKGROUND: The Officer's service tunic followed the basic design of the EM/NCO's field blouse with the most readily visible difference, besides the insignia, being the turned up French cuffs. Officers and certain senior NCO ranks were responsible for purchasing their own uniforms and as a result were allotted a clothing allowance through the army's Kleiderkasse, (Clothing Account), system. The Officers and certain senior NCO's could choose to purchase their uniforms from the armed forces clothing depots or to privately purchase garments of higher quality. Although enlisted personnel were issued their uniforms from government supplies they were also permitted to purchase privately tailored uniforms although the price may have been restrictive. The different branches of service within the German army were allocated a particular identifying waffenfarbe, (Branch of Service Color), which was displayed as the base on the shoulder boards with cornflower blue being chosen for Medical personnel.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Nice quality, private purchase, field-grey, wool/rayon blend construction tunic features a vertical, six button front closure with dual metal hooks and eyes positioned at the forward neckline. The tunic has four, pleated, patch front pockets with scalloped button down flaps. The right breast has an officers quality, hand embroidered, national eagle in bright silver/aluminum and bullion wire threads with black accent threads mounted on a cut-out, blue/green badge cloth base. The eagle is neatly handstitched to the tunic. The left breast pocket has award loops for one award and one ribbon bar. Russian Front and KVK ribbon to the second button hole. The reverse of the tunic has a small, central, vertical, tail skirt slash. The straight cut sleeves have deep, turned back, French cuffs which are stitched in the upright position at both the inner and outer sleeve seams. The tunic has sewn on shoulder boards of matte, silver/aluminum Russian braid, mounted on cornflower blue wool waffenfarbe bases with a single caduceus, (Serpent intertwined on a staff), and rank pip to each. The tunic has a lay down, blue/green badge cloth construction collar which features hand embroidered collar tab litzen in matte silver/aluminum wire threads with the twisted, cornflower blue rayon, branch of service stripes. The collar tabs are mounted on blue/green badge cloth bases which shows through the litzen as the center stripe and are machine stitched to the collar. The interior of the tunic is fully lined in light blue rayon. The buttons are all the pebbled, magnetic sheet metal type and all appear to have their original stitching. The tunic is roughly size 32" chest. Tunic comes with a well worn and used Medical officers visor cap. Lining is complete, sweat diamond is mostly gone. The majority of the original ersatz sweatband is present, but there are quite a few tears. Visor has some repair stitching to each side where the stitching had started to pull loose. Visor is probably a size 56 or 57. Very nice tunic!
