H001582 TROPICAL EQUIPMENT STRAP FOR NON-MOUNTED PERSONNEL. (Tropen Mantelriemen für Fusstruppen)

BACKGROUND: All EM/NCO personnel were issued three leather straps designed to secure the rolled greatcoat to the backpack, etc.. The straps came in two different patterns with one pattern designated, "Mantelriemen für Fusstruppen", (Greatcoat straps for Foot troops), which had an additional auxiliary strap and the other pattern designated, "Mantelriemen für Unberittene der Berittenen Truppen", (Greatcoat straps for unmounted personnel of Mounted Troops), without the inclusion of the additional auxiliary strap. Both patterns of these straps were to become popular for a wide variety of uses. In late 1940, with the impending German entrance into the North African campaign, tropical uniforms and equipment were quickly developed and issued in time for DAK, Deutsches Afrika Korps, (German Africa Corps), personnel’s arrival in Tripoli in February 1941. One of the items introduced was the canvas web construction equipment straps. Eventually, due to leather shortages, many of the tropical uniform and equipment items would be issued to personnel serving in southern areas of continental Europe and other theatres of battle.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 50cm long, 20mm wide, khaki/tan canvas web construction strap with steel and natural tan leather fittings. The strap has no visible manufacturers markings. Scarce tropical equipment strap, near mint and nice!
