S12453 SS VEHICLE PENNANT.
(SS Fahrzeug Wimpel)BACKGROUND: On September 15TH 1936 Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler introduced a series of vehicle command pennants. The design of the pennants varied according to rank with the sequence running from a Sturmbanne (Battalion), commanders pennant right up to a distinctive pennant for the Reichsführer-SS himself. Most of these pennants were only authorized for use by Allgemeine-SS personnel and during the war Waffen-SS commanders and headquarters' units utilized the army pattern vehicle pennants. Another vehicle pennant that had no indication of rank or position was also introduced and was utilized on all branches of SS vehicles as identifying insignia.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Standard issue, magnetic sheet metal construction SS vehicle pennant with a painted on image. The horizontally triangular pennant is roughly, 8 3/4" tall at the hoist end and 13 1/2" long tapering into a point at the fly end. The pennant features a black painted background field with roughly 3 1/8" tall, white stenciled SS runes encompassed by a 4 5/8" diameter, white stenciled circular border to each side. The two, long, horizontal edges of the pennant have alternating white and black painted lines simulating twisted black and white cord trimming. Both the top and bottom edges of the hoist end have riveted on, horizontally extended, nickel/silver plated, alloy tabs for securing the pennant to a pole attached to the vehicle. The extended tabs each have dual sets of screw tightening holes and a vertical circular pole receiver. One of the extended pole attachment tabs is well marked with a stamped RZM logo and the manufacturers code, "M3/61", indicating an unknown manufacturer. The pennant is in overall very good condition and retains about 95% of its original paint with numerous light surface scratches and scuffs. Nice example.
