S030156 SS-VT, "SS-BAUEINSATZ-OST", CUFFTITLE. (Ärmelstreiffen)
BACKGROUND: One of the main doctrines of the NSDAP, Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (National Socialist German Worker’s Party), was the need, and indeed the right, to have more Lebensraum, (Living Space), for Germany. As a result Adolf Hitler established the RKFDV, Hauptamt, Reichskommissariat für die Festigung des deutschen Volkstums Ausland, (Main Office National Commission for the Consolidation of Germanism), on October 7TH 1939 and appointed Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler as its commander. With the NSDAP’s ideology of the racial superiority of the Germans compared to the racially inferior Slavic peoples the Germans justified their right to displace the Slavs and resettle the territories with suitable Nordic personnel. By May 1942 the RKFDV had drawn up a detailed twenty-five year plan to Germanize and resettle the occupied Eastern territories. The resettlement plans included dividing the occupied Eastern territories into three large provinces and replacing indigenous peoples with German "Wehrbauern", (Soldier/Farmers), which would not only farm the land but also have their own self defence units. The plan was to issue parcels of land to suitable Germans on a hereditary basis creating a lasting legacy and offering protection from any threats from the East and also providing Himmler with his own personal fiefdom. In their recruitment drive the Waffen-SS placed great emphasizes on the fact that at the successful conclusion of the war all SS personnel would be eligible to receive a free parcel of land in the East. The SS-Baueinsatz-Ost, (SS Construction Operation-East), was a subordinate unit to the RKFDV and was tasked with the preliminary work on the eastern resettlement program. The SS-Baueinsatz-Ost drew its personnel from SS personnel who were not suitable for service in the Waffen-SS. Due to the worsening war situation in the east, political infighting and labor shortages in Germany the eastern resettlement program was still in its infancy when it deteriorated into nothing more than a pipe dream. Of Note: On November 6TH 1941 Himmler assigned SS-Obergruppenführer Ulrich Greifelt as leader of the RKFDV, a position he held until the end of the war.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 1 1/16" tall, 15 1/8" long, woven, black, rayon construction cufftitle with machine embroidered Latin script and SS runes, "SS-Baueinsatz-Ost", in silvery/grey cotton threads. The cufftitle is bordered at both top and bottom edges in horizontally woven, seven strand, bright silver/aluminum wire threads. The cufftitle has one folded over, machine stitched end. The cufftitle is in overall good condition with light age and usage toning to the script, a couple of small picks and pulls and light to moderate fraying to the unfinished end. Scarce SS-Baueinsatz-Ost cufftitle.
