S027161 OAK-LEAF "A" CAMOUFLAGE/WHITE, REVERSIBLE WINTER PARKA. (Tarnungs Jacke)

BACKGROUND: The development of SS, Schutz Staffel, (Protection Squad), camouflage items was initiated by Reichsführer-SS, (National Leader of the SS), Heinrich Himmler in 1935 when he tasked the Reichsführung-SS, (National Leadership of the SS), to begin research of new camouflage patterns and garments for use by the fledgling SS-VT, SS-Verfugüngstruppe, (SS-Special Purpose Troops). In late 1936 and early 1937 the first SS camouflage garments were issued to personnel of the SS-VT Standarte Deutschland, (Regiment Germany), for field testing and evaluation. The first items evaluated were the Quarter shelters/ponchos, followed by steel helmet covers, face masks and smocks. As the war continued various other clothing items were produced in the assorted camouflage patterns. Originally the camouflage patterns were all produced in the time consuming manual screen printing until the development of the machine roller printing in 1940. By the end of the war no fewer then ten, new, assorted camouflage patterns had been developed and used by the SS. Of Note: The SS-FHA, SS-Führungshauptamt, (SS-Operational Headquarters), and the SS-WVHA, SS-Wirtschafts und Verwaltungs Hauptamt, (SS-Economic and Administration Department) were the two departments responsible for supplying and maintaining all personnel of the SS. The SS-FHA was responsible for issuing the initial equipment, supply and maintenance of weapons and ammunition, and the supply of technical equipment and transport vehicles. The SS-WVHA, was responsible for issue of clothing and personal equipment items as well as rations including horse and pack animal fodder and personal fuel items. After the devastating winter of 1941/42 on the Russian front the army’s OKH, Oberkommando des Heeres, (High Command of the Army), saw the need for heavier winter clothing and testing began in the spring of 1942 to develop suitable garments. In April 1942 Hitler approved the chosen design, and the first models were issued in the autumn of that year, in the reversible blue/grey/white colorations, which were modified to camouflage pattern/white combinations in 1943. Included with these new garments were heavy, padded, reversible winter suits which consisted of a parka, pants and separate hoods and mittens. Of Note: These garments were also produced in non-reversible models. The winter suits were a standard issue item and were distributed to all EM/NCO’s for the winter season, (September 15TH to April 15TH), with other winter garments and were to be returned to the units clothing depot in April for storage, repair and cleaning to be reissued the following September. Originally Officers and senior NCO’s responsible for purchasing their own uniforms and headgear were required to purchase the new winter garments until regulations of December 1942 extended the issue winter clothing to all ranks in the colder theatres of operation. Although the suits proved quite effective they were very difficult to keep clean and launder which resulted in regulations dictating that the white side was only to be worn on the exterior when absolutely necessary. The Waffen-SS, (Armed-SS), followed the army’s lead and new winter items, utilizing assorted SS camouflage patterns, were issued in October 1943. This example is in the machine rolled, screen printed, Oak-Leaf "A", (Eichen-Blatt Muster A), camouflage pattern which was originally developed in 1941 and was utilized through to 1945 for a wide variety of garments. Of Interest: It is alleged that the Oak-Leaf camouflage patterns, (Types "A" and "B", Circa 1941-1945), originated as a base underlay of the Blurred Edge camouflage pattern with the addition of a two toned, "shadow" over-print.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Three quarter length, cotton/rayon blend construction, double breasted style, parka with the machine rolled, screen printed, autumn Oak-leaf "A" camouflage pattern to one side with a primarily tan base with repeating splotches, in shades of orangish/tans and browns, reversible to white, with an internal ersatz padding. The parka features a large, overlapping, vertical, six button front closure with a smaller, overlapping, wind flap. The parka has two, diagonally angled, slash, hip pockets with scalloped edged, button down flaps. The parka has a tunnel loop and a small, vertical, slash to each side of the front closure, positioned horizontally at the waistline with an inserted, white and greyish/tan, fabric fit adjustment drawstrap intact. The straight cut, sleeve cuffs each have a tunnel loop and a small, vertical, slash with an inserted, button holed, white and greyish/tan, fabric, drawstrap and dual corresponding fit adjustment buttons to each. The small, vertical, slashes at the waistline and cuffs permitted the fit adjustment straps to be utilized on both the camouflage and white sides. The elbow portion of the sleeves each have a dual-ply, vertically rectangular reinforcement panel machine stitched in place. The parka has an unpadded, dual-ply, integral hood, which is large enough to accommodate a helmet, with a tunnel loop, intended for a fit adjustment drawstring, and five, small, tapering darts to the forward edge. The hood drawstring is absent. The parka reverses to white with all the same features as the camouflage side. The parka has an internal, heat retaining padding through-out. The parka is in overall very good condition with light chafe wear to the cuff and collar edges, a few small picks and pulls and light to moderate age and usage toning, primarily to the white side. The buttons to the camouflage side are a combination of the field-grey painted, pebbled, magnetic sheet metal and alloy types while the buttons to the white side are the ersatz, pressed, tan cardboard type and roughly half appear to have been restitched. The parkas were designed large enough to fit over the standard service uniform and this example is roughly size 42", (106.7cm), chest.
