BACKGROUND: The wear of Awards, Medal Bars and Ribbon Bars were addressed in regulations of April 28^TH 1937 and followed the established directives that had been previously laid down. When an award was instituted the introductory orders would prescribe the proper form of wear with most of the awards being permitted to be grouped together on a medal or ribbon bar. The medal bars were intended for wear on the walking-out dress and formal uniforms while the ribbon bars were intended for all other forms of dress. Strict regulations listed the required order in which ribbons awards were authorized to be worn on the ribbon bar.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The three place ribbon bar is roughly, 3/4" tall and 1 3/4" wide and features a horizontal ribbed, rayon, Iron Cross 2^ND class ribbon, a War Merit Cross 2^ND class ribbon with a gilt washed, stamped alloy crossed swords cypher and a Long Service 2^ND class Medal ribbon with a silver washed, stamped alloy, SS runic cypher with diagonally angled ribbing all mounted on a magnetic sheet metal base plate. The reverse of the base plate has a protective field-grey wool backing handstitched in place and a horizontal pin back device intact. The ribbons are in overall good condition with light to moderate age and usage toning. Of Note: Introduced on January 30^TH 1938, the SS Long Service Award was only bestowed to personnel serving with SS-Verfügungstruppen, (SS-Special Purpose Troops), SS-Totenkopfverbände, (SS-Death’s Head Units,) and SS-Junkerschulen, (SS-Officer’s Schools), and all other long serving SS personnel were awarded the NSDAP, Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, (National Socialist German Worker’s Party), Long Service Award if eligible. Also of Note: The SS Long Service Award was awarded in four classes with the fourth class award for four years service, the third class award for eight years service, the second class award for twelve years service and the first class award for twenty-five years service. When worn on a ribbon bar only the first and second class awards included the SS runic cypher, with a silver cypher for the second class award and a gold cypher for the first class award.
