S013959 POLIZEI WINTER FUR CAP. (Pelzmützen)

BACKGROUND: On June 17TH 1936, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler was appointed to the newly created position of Chef der Deutschen Polizei im Reichsministerium des Innern, (Chief of the German Police in the National Ministry of the Interior), effectively giving him full control of all police agencies within Germany. As a result of this appointment and the restructuring of all the separate German state police into a single national police force new regulations were instituted on June 25TH 1936 to bring about uniformity in dress for all police through-out the country although it wasn’t until April 1ST 1937 that it was fully implemented. As with other organizations Polizei personnel serving in colder climates were issued the standard winter fur cap.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Polizei grey/green wool construction cap with slightly mottled brown rabbit fur front, fold down side ear lugs and back panels. The side ear lugs and back panel of the cap are held in the upright position by dual off white HBT, (Herring Bone Twill), rayon tie tapes. The tie tapes were also utilized for a secure closure when the side and back panels were worn in the lowered position to protect the nape of the neck and chin. The reverse of the fold down side ear lugs and back panel are lined in ribbed grey/green cotton twill. The central front fur panel can be folded downward to act as a visor if required. The front of the cap has a very nice one piece machine woven BeVo Polizei EM’s insignia. The insignia is machine stitched in place. The interior of the cap is fully lined in quilted, ribbed, grey cotton/rayon blend material with an internal padding. The interior lining is nicely marked with black inkstamped manufactures marks that include the size, "58", the date, "1944" and an RB number. Of Note: The RB numbers, Reichsbetriebnummer, (National factory code numbers), were introduced in late 1942 and were intended to replace the manufacturers marks on garments and equipment to conceal the manufactures name and location from the allies, to prevent bombing raids on German industrial factories. The cap is in overall very good condition with areas of light nap wear and minor age and usage toning.
