BACKGROUND: On acceptance into full-time or auxiliary police service individuals were issued a Dienstausweis, (Service Identification Card), for use as identification and a Dienstpass, (Service Pass), for internal administration to record the individuals police service record. The Dienstausweis for full time personnel were constructed in green oilcloth while those for auxiliary personnel were in blue oilcloth.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 4 1/8" x 5 3/4", dual fold, light weight, blue oilcloth construction card with black printed script and typed, handwritten and inkstamped particulars. The front cover features the black printed, police emblem consisting of a right facing, Police eagle with out-stretched wings, clutching a canted swastika in its talons encompassed by a vertically oval, oak-leave wreath and the Gothic script title, "Dienstausweis" along with the typed recipients name, service serial number and rank, "Oberwm. d. Sch. d. R.", indicating Oberwachtmeister der Schutzpolizei des Reiches der Reserve, (Staff Sergeant of the National Protection Police Reserves). The printed, typed and inkstamped script to the first interior page indicates the card was issued at "Hamburg" on "28. 1. 1942" and list the recipient’s name, birth date and location and his position as a "Hilfspoliziebeamter des Schutzpolizei Hamburg", (Auxiliary Police Official Protection Police Hamburg). The script also includes, "Er ist berechtigt, Waffen zu tragen", (He is authorized to carry a firearm). The second interior page has three annual verification entries for 1942 through to 1944. The exterior back page has a dual inkstamped, black and white photograph of the elderly recipient in a police uniform and the recipient’s signature. All the entries have the appropriate authorizing signatures and/or inkstamps. The card is in overall very good condition with minor age and usage toning and fraying to the top edge.
