S004859 POLICE NCO'S "COME-ALONGS". (Polizei Entlangkommen)
BACKGROUND: As with Police forces through-out the world the German police of the Third Reich era were outfitted with protective/defensive weapons and restraining equipment when performing their normal duties. The most common restraining device was, and still is, handcuffs which could be placed on a suspects wrists resulting in severe limitations of mobility. Another, less common device were the "Come-Alongs", which basically fulfilled the same function as the handcuffs but didn’t require a key. The "Come-Alongs" were issued in limited quantities, instead of the handcuffs, to NCO ranks when performing their regular policing duties and were to be returned to the police departments stores at the end of duty for further reissue. The "Come-Alongs", consist of two, "T" interlocking, shaped bars connected by a chain and would be applied and twisted around a resisting suspect’s wrist on a pressure point resulting in pacifying the suspect. Of Note: The German Police had no enlisted ranks with the lowest rank being an Unterwachtmeister which was equivalent to the German army rank of Unteroffizier. Of Note: A photographic example of this type of "Come-Alongs", are featured in J. R. Angolia’s and H. P. Taylor’s book, Uniforms, Organization & History of the German Police, volume 1, page 616.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Nickel/silver plated, cast steel construction, "Come-alongs" consist of two, interlocking "T" shaped end pieces joined together by roughly, 10 3/4" long, fifteen, heavy, steel chain links. One of the "T" shaped end pieces has a roughly, 3 3/8" long, horizontal bar with a semi-circular recess to the top edge and both sides allowing the other, roughly, 3 " long, "T" shaped horizontal bar, end piece to fit securely in place. With the two "T" shaped ends interlocked the chain links would be twisted resulting in applied pressure to pacify a resisting suspect. The "Come-Alongs" are in overall very good condition although somewhat crudely cast, and the nickel/silver plating is fully retained and still quite bright. The "Come-Alongs" have no visible manufacturer’s markings. Unique police restraining item.
