N34355 NSFK NATIONAL LEADER'S SCHOOL GRADUATE'S SLEEVE INSIGNIA. (Ärmelabzeichen)
BACKGROUND: Originally instituted in January of 1932, the NSFK, "Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps" (National-socialist Flying-corps), was soon absorbed into the DLV, "Deutscher Luftsport Verband" (German Air-sports Association). In April of 1937 the NSFK was re-established, and, at the same time, the DLV was disbanded. The NSFK was mainly a voluntary organization, with a small cadre of paid personnel, whose mandate was to train its members in the flying of powered aircraft, gliders, and balloons. In March of 1931 a "Reichsführerschule" (National-leader’s-school) was established in Munich, to politically indoctrinate selected students (initially only from the SA, but later from other Nazi organizations) and qualify them as instructors in their own right. Successful RFS graduates wore a "Tyr" rune on the upper left sleeve of their uniforms. As fewer NSFK officers would have qualified for admission, it is rare to see this insignia worn by them.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A "Tyr" rune, in the form of a black, upright arrow, which is machine sewn to a larger white wool arrow, which, in turn, is sewn to a larger red arrow, and then that is sewn to a grey wool backing, in the form of an elongated hexagon, 2 1/2" wide and 3 5/8" tall. The color of the backing, being the same as that of the uniform it was to be sewn unto, determines which organization the awarded member belonged to. The insignia exhibits only light age soiling, evidently having never been issued.
