N27954 REISSUED DUTCH M16 "TeNo" HELMET. (Stahlhelm)

BACKGROUND: TeNo, "Technischen Nothilfe" (Technical Emergency-Aid), was originally established in 1919, its members comprised of skilled civilian personnel who would voluntarily avail themselves to maintain and repair essential services in the event of a natural disaster or emergency. TeNo was administered by the Minister of the Interior, until mid-1939, when it became an official state organization under control of the Police, which, in turn, was controlled by the SS. With this change in status a small nucleus of salaried officials were employed to run the organization. As the war dragged on, TeNo became more of a para-military organization, with its direction becoming increasingly controlled by the Waffen-SS.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A metal helmet, painted to both its exterior and interior in glossy black, whose all-around visor is somewhat elongated to the rear. Eight, equidistantly-spaced rivets may be seen to the exterior just above where the apron begins to flare, which secure the interior liner. Horizontal slots are along the visor to either side of its front, and to its reverse. Decals have been applied to the helmet over each ear, both in the form of an angular shields, 1 1/4" wide and 1 1/2" tall. The decal over the left ear is edged in silver and has, in silver its black background, the TeNo emblem of an upright hammer, resembling a "T," over which is an "N," with the two of them encircled by a cogged wheel. The decal over the left ear is equally divided into three horizontal bars - orange to the top, then white, with blue to the bottom. These are the national colors of Holland. Both decals, as with the remainder of the helmet’s exterior, have moderate surface scratching to them. To the interior is its three-piece, blackened leather liner, which extends from behind the 7/8" wide, thick, stiffened leather headband fixed by the exterior rivets. Each section of the liner divides into two "fingers," with each of these having dual perforations to their ends, through which their adjusting tie string passes. The leather liner exhibits noticeable chafe wear, but is still supple. Beneath each of its three sections is thick, felt padding, which is also riveted to the headband. Over each ear are the swiveling, rectangular "rings" around which are wrapped and doubly riveted the ends of the blackened leather chin strap. The shorter portion of the chin strap is also doubly riveted around an alloy gripper buckle, which the longer portion passes through. It too is chafe worn but still supple. The paint to the interior of the helmet is mostly retained, with what surface scratching it has localized along the visor.
