N10547 RAD SUBORDINATE'S HEWER.
(Unterführer Haumesser des RAD) Introduced in August 1934 for wear by ranks of Truppführer (Corporal) and above in the Reichs Arbeits Dienst (National Labour Service). In 1937 a Leader’s dagger was introduced and the hewer was only worn by RAD Unterführen (EM/NCOs). A broad, 9 3/4" long, nickel/silver plated Bowie or Bolo style blade with a narrow fuller and false edge. To the obverse of the blade is the acid etched motto "Arbeit adelt" (Work Ennobles), in Gothic script. The reverse ricasso is marked with an acid etched "RADJ" inspection mark in an inverted triangle. Beneath this is "Ges. Gesch.," for Gesetzlich Geschützt (Protected by Law). Beneath this is the logo of a trident encompassed by dual oval rings within which is the script "Ed. Wüsthof Solingen." The blade shows very light surface spotting and typical scabbard runner marks. The single cross guard, bolster, front and back straps, and pommel are all in heavy, solid nickel/silver. The pommel is in the form of a stylized eagle’s beak. This hilt shows some minor dings, but no other damage. Its stag horn grips are held in place by two counter sunk screw-headed bolts. The sheet metal scabbard has large top and bottom nickel/silver fittings. Both fittings are secured by two extended flat head screws on either side. To the upper edge of the top fitting is an elongated bar into which is attached a polished steel clip for the second-pattern hanger. To the reverse of this clip is stamped a "RADJ" inspection mark in an inverted triangle, underneath which are the numbers "37," and a stylised "A" with "A & S" underneath, for the manufacturers, Assmann & Sohn. The top fitting has deeply stamped, ornate, Celtic-style swirls with impressed horizontal lines and a scalloped pointed tip. The bottom fitting has the deeply stamped RAD emblem of a spade head, with impressed horizontal lines, upon which is a swastika, flanked by sheaves of wheat. The fittings show some chafe wear, particularly to the reverse. The scabbard body retains about 60% of its original black paint, with moderate scuffs and scratches and a fair size area of wear to the base metal to the reverse. Overall, a nice example.GRADE ***1/2 PRICE $ SOLD
