N075778 DAF MEMBER'S LAPEL PIN. (Mitgliednadel)

BACKGROUND: The "Deutsche Arbeitsfront" (German Labor-front), originally founded in 1933, became an official NSDAP organization in October 1934. Its stated purpose was to educate the workers in industry and commerce in furtherance of the smooth and efficient operation of all labor in the Third Reich. It also controlled the KdF, "Kraft durch Freude" (Strength through Joy) organization which provided recreation for workers. However, DAF’s most important goal was to enforce the political stability of the large mass of work force.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A die-struck, nickel/silver plated alloy pin which features the DAF emblem of a cut-out, mobile swastika within a fourteen-toothed cog, 18mm in diameter. Where the cog is smooth, the swastika has raised edges within which is a cross-hatched pattern. It is difficult to determine whether the plating has dulled with age or if only the matt grey underlying alloy remains. A RZM logo and the number "76" without the M1 prefix, is embossed to the reverse. This latter designation would indicate manufacture by Hillenbrand & Bröer, Lüdenscheid. A 50mm long rifled pin is soldered to the reverse center of the swastika.
