N07551 D.D.A.C. 1938 GERMAN ROAD MAP. (Landkarte) BACKGROUND: The D.D.A.C., "Der Deutsche Automobil-Club" (The German Automobile Club) was instituted in September 1933 by N.S.K.K. Korpsführer Adolf Hühnlein as an independent organization that was similar to the American Automobile Association. The club consisted of personnel who owned a car, and who were not members of the N.S.K.K. DESCRIPTION: The 41 3/8" x 34 7/8" paper map is folded into a 5 1/4" x 8 3/4" cardstock cover. To the top of the cover is a stylized national eagle, in black, with "D.D.A.C.," in white, centered on its breast, and its talons clutching a red circle within which is a black mobile swastika. The image is surrounded by a dual-lined vertical oval. Beneath it is printed "Strassenzustands-Karte von Deutschland" with, underneath that, its translation into English ("Germany: Condition of Roads"), French, Italian, Spanish, and what must be Czechoslovakian. A 1938 date and its 1:1 100 000 scale indication follows, as well as, in red, "Mitgliederausgabe" (Member’s-edition) and "Nord" (North). "Herausgeber: Der Deutsche Automobilclub e.V." (Publisher: The German Automobile Club registered Organization ["eingetragener Verein"]) and "Sitz München" (Seat [in the sense of situated in] Munich) is to the base of the cover. To its reverse is printed a listing of the "DDAC Information Offices," alphabetically from A to G. The remainder must have been printed to the, absent, back cover. The cover is moderately age soiled and noticeably frayed to its edges. The map itself has printed along its upper left edge, in red and in six languages, "Edition summer 1938." A box beneath this repeats the multi-lingual title and publisher as seen to the cover, underneath of which is printed "unter Mitwirkung der Straßenbauverwaltungen der Länder und preußischen Provinzen. Motorwelt-Wirtschafts-u.Verlags-G.m.b.H." (under Co-operation of-the Road-construction-administration of-the Lands and prussian Provinces. Motorworld-Business-and Publishers-Limited liability company ["Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung"]). A repetition of the scale and a listing of road types found on the map, again in six languages, follows. Represented on the map is all of Germany, with its road systems, towns and topography, bordered to the west by France and the low countries, to the south by Switzerland, Italy and Yugoslavia, to the east by Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Poland, and to the north by Denmark. A small map box to the upper right depicts the "Memelland" region, which would otherwise be off of the map to the north east. Typical age yellowing, and some separation along the fold lines, is evident.
