N051658 DJ PROFICIENCY BADGE IN CLOTH. (Leistungsabzeichen des DJ)
BACKGROUND: In an attempt to promote physical fitness the Leistungsabzeichen des Deutschen Jungvolks, (Proficiency Badge of the German Young People), was introduced by Reichsjugendführer Baldur von Schirach on September 26TH 1935, for award to DJ members from the ages of twelve to fourteen years old, after successful completion of the prescribed tests. The testing for award of the badge included military like training exercise and political indoctrination. As with most awards a cloth version was authorized for wear by qualifying personnel.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly 3 3/8" tall, 2 1/2" wide, white rayon diamond shaped base with a machine woven black outer border line encompassing a central machine woven black sigrune with superimposed dual circular lines with Gothic script, "Für Leistungen Im DJ", (For Proficiency in the German Young People), encompassing a central canted swastika. The badge is still on its original white rayon factory roll. The reverse of the badge has its original white paper RZM/HJ tag with red printed script and black inkstamped manufacturers numerical code. The tag has both the red printed RZM logo and the HJ diamond. The badge shows light age toning but is in overall excellent unissued condition. Of Note: These badges were issued in only one grade and award was discontinued in 1944 with roughly 152,600 being awarded.
