BACKGROUND: The "Deutscher Frauenarbeitsdienst" (German Women’s -labor-service) was originally established as a voluntary labor organization in February 1933 under the auspices of the "NS Frauenschaft" (National Socialist Women’s-organization). In June 1935 a law was enacted to make labor service compulsory, and in April 1936 the Deutscher Frauenarbeitsdienst was separated from the NS Frauenschaft, becoming the RADwj, "ReichsArbeitsDienst der weiblichen jugend" (National-Labour-Service for female youth). Its leadership was divided into two groups, as determined by the age of the members.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: An massive, approximately 96" x 156", double-sided, two-piece construction printed cotton flag. To either side of its red base, offset near the hoist edge, is a 68" diameter white field with a black mobile swastika above two black, diagonally-angled sheaves of wheat printed to it. Several lines of reinforced stitching are to each of the extreme corners, and reinforcing triangles are to each corner of the hoist edge. Complete with original bunting rope and attachment clips. Nice original makers label with Köln address. Excellent, untouched example.
