N048058 NSKK TRAFFIC EDUCATION SERVICE, DUTY GORGET. (Verkehrserziehungsdienst Brustschild)
BACKGROUND: The development of the NSKK, National Sozialistisches Kraftfahr Korps, (National Socialist Motor Corps), can be traced back to 1923 when the SA introduced a Kraftfahr Abteilung, (Motor Section), to transport personnel as required. In 1928 the SA Motor section was expanded to Kraftfahrstaffeln, (Motor Squadrons). In an attempt to create a national motor corps the NSAK, National Sozialistisches Automobil Korps, (National Socialist Automobile Corps), was formed in April 1930 as a NSDAP auxiliary organization subordinate to the SA. In early 1931 Adolf Hühnlein was appointed as Chief of the NSAK and proposed a name change to NSKK, which was officially accepted in April 1931. In 1934 the NSKK became a fully independent organization under control of the NSDAP and was charged with training personnel and the development of motorized transportation for all the NSDAP organizations. In 1937 the NSKK was also tasked with assisting the German police in traffic control. NSKK personnel assigned to traffic control service were issued a distinctive, arm badge for wear on the upper right sleeve, a traffic control paddle and a gorget.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Stamped aluminum, half-moon shaped gorget measures roughly 7" wide from upper tip to tip and 3 1/2" tall. Gorget features a smooth, black painted, background field with a central embossed NSKK eagle with a scripted, scrolled banner, "NSKK", above its head, flanked by embossed Latin script, "N.S.K.K. Verkehrs-Erziehungsdienst", (NSKK Traffic Education Service), all in natural aluminum. Gorget also has separate, natural aluminum, serial numbers with horizontal ribbing and raised outer edges, "17X97", situated just above the scripted scrolled banner. The number"1" is loose from the gorget and the middle number is missing. The number "7" has a glue repair behind it. The numerals are secured to the gorget by two bent prongs to the reverse of each. Gorget has a raised, rolled back natural aluminum lip to outside edges and a natural aluminum rivet to each top tip to secure the suspension chain. The suspension chain is of the field Polizei type and consists of twenty-six, large, natural aluminum, oval links secured to each other by two smaller natural aluminum links to each. Reverse of the gorget has both chain securing hooks and central vertical attachment tang intact. Reverse of the gorget is also in natural aluminum and has most of the original protective backing cloth. The obverse of the gorget retains about 95% of its original black painted finish. Very hard to find gorget.
