N045259 "Ground Röhm" SA M33 DAGGER. (SA Dolch)

BACKGROUND: In 1934 Ernst Röhm instituted a honor dagger for members serving prior to December 1931. The dagger was identical in every respect to the standard SA dagger with the exception that it had the inscription "In Herzlicher Freundschaft Ernst Röhm" to the reverse of the blade. After Röhm’s fall from power during the "The night of the long knives" in 1934, all SA personal where ordered to remove the inscription. Surviving examples can sometimes be found with partial inscriptions remaining while the majority of the daggers had it completely ground off.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: "Ground Röhm" SA dagger with a 8 3/4" long, double-edged, drop-forged, nickel-silver plated blade, in its original scabbard. The dagger has a cast, solid nickel-silver pommel and tang nut. Its contoured wooden grip has, inlaid to its obverse, the enameled "SA" signet near the pommel, and an eagle and swastika to its center. "Sw" is stamped to the reverse of its solid nickel-silver cross guard, indicating that the bearer was attached to SA -Group "Südwest." Abbreviated group markings such as that are most commonly found on blades produced between 1933 and 1935. "Alles für Deutschland" (Everything for Germany) is acid etched, in Gothic script, to the front of the blade. The manufacturer's mark "E. P. & S." for E. Pack & Sohne and a partial ground Röhm inscription to the blades reverse. The majority of the inscription is still present with the Röhm’s name being ground off. The lack of an RZM, "Reichszeugmeisterei" (National-materiel-control-office), logo and code marks most likely indicates that this blade was made before October of 1934, as those made after that date would have included them. The 9 7/8" tall scabbard has a solid nickel-silver throat, mouthpiece, and lower scabbard fitting. The body of the scabbard is comprised of brown anodized sheet metal, most of the finish is worn off. Dome-headed securing screws are to either side of its throat and along the upper edges of its scalloped lower fitting. A ball tip is to the end of this lower fitting. To one side of the mouthpiece is the loop for the hanger ring, and the nickel-silver ring itself. Nice example of a Ground Röhm dagger, with the majority of the inscription still present!.
