N033759 NSFK/CIVIL GLIDING PROFICIENCY BADGE CLASS "B". (Segelflieger-B-Abzeichen Gleitfleigerprüfung ‘B’)
BACKGROUND: The International Aeronautical Federation, a pre-WWII organization, awarded a series of proficiency badges to glider pilots on the successful completion of the appropriate tests and gliding trials. Originally, these awards were constructed of metal with enamel work. In 1933 the German civil glider clubs introduced a cloth version to be worn on the left breast. All German civil gliding clubs were absorbed into the DLV in March 1933, and these, in turn, were absorbed into the NSFK in 1937.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A "B" class gliding proficiency badge, for a sixty second free flight with an "S" turn maneuver, featuring two hand embroidered "gulls" in silver-aluminum threads, encompassed by a silver-aluminum circular border, on a 1 3/4" diameter blue/grey wool base.
