N031259 CASED NSFK 2ND INTERNATIONAL AIR RACE MEDALLION. (NSFK Abzeichen)
BACKGROUND: Originally instituted in January of 1932, the NSFK, "Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps" (National-socialist Flying-corps), was soon absorbed into the DLV, "Deutscher Luftsport Verband" (German Air-sports Association). In April of 1937 the NSFK was re-established, and, at the same time, the DLV was disbanded. The NSFK was mainly a voluntary organization, with a small cadre of paid personnel, whose mandate was to train its members in the flying of powered aircraft, gliders, and balloons. The NSFK issued a variety of very attractive non portable awards, normally with cases. The awards where given out to participants and sometime spectators and the organizations various competitions.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Very attractive award for the 2nd International air race held in Frankfurt in 1939. Heavy, die-struck alloy with beautiful enamel work in dark and light blue with gilt lettering an details. Affixed to the front of the award is a nicely detailed NSFK emblem of a winged man in flight, (Icarus), with swastika superimposed on his legs and a semi-circular banner to top with recessed script, "NSFK" in silver. Script reads " 2. Internat. Luftrennen", "NS-Fliegerkorps Frankfurt a.m. 1939". Award measures 60mm x 86mm. Reverse is maker marked to the firm of Gustav Brehmer. Awards is housed in its original 12cm x 10cm x 2cm issue case with white simulated grained leather covering. Reverse of case with two magnetic staggered internal bar hinges and obverse with magnetic push button closure clip. Interior base of case with white velvet lining with depression to secure the medallion and a white rayon pull tab for easy removal of the award. Interior top of case with white satin lining mounted on a cardboard base with golden printed script, "Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps Der Korpsführer". All components in very good condition. Nice!
