BACKGROUND: Shortly after Hitler assumed power in 1933, he abolished the Weimar-era national tricolor flag of black, red and gold, returning to the Imperial German colors of black, white and red. By September of 1935 the swastika flag was adopted as the official national and mercantile flag of Germany.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A 56" x 40", wool "bunting" construction flag, comprised of three bars of, from top to bottom, black, white, and red, each sewn horizontally to the other. Along its hoist edge is a 7/8" wide section of white canvas, wrapped and sewn around a cord which exits either end in the form of a loop. Its white and red fields are noticeably soiled, and there are small holes throughout, as well as one moderate-sized tear to its black field.
