N030558 NATIONAL FORESTRY OFFICIAL'S SERVICE CAP. (Dienstmütze)
BACKGROUND:
Forestry and hunting in Germany enjoys a long history and traditions that continue to the present day. In July of 1933, Hermann Göring was appointed as "Reichsforst und Jägermeister" (National-forestry and Hunting-master), as head of the "Reichsforstamt" (National-forestry-department). In that capacity he was in charge of administering all aspects of forestry and hunting, including the development, maintenance and conservation of all of the forests and wild game within Germany. The "Reichsforstamt" was sub-divided into four main departments: the "Gemeinde Forst Dienst" (General Forestry Service), "Privat Forst Dienst" (Private Forestry Service), "Heeres Forst Dienst" (Army Forestry Service), and the "Luftwaffe Forst Dienst" (Air-force Forestry Service). Personnel in all four services were assigned a uniform.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A one piece, mid-green, felt Fedora with a 2" wide, dark green, center band which has a layered pattern to the left side of the crown. The all round visor is piped in dark green and is down-turned to the front and upturned to the sides and back. The crown has the typical shape of a fedora of that time, creased lengthwise down the crown and pinched in the front on both sides. To the front of the crown is a left facing eagle which features extended, pointed wing tips with a roughly 2 1/2" wingspan. The eagle is nicely convexed to fit the contours of the hat. To the interior is a 1 5/8" wide, dark green leather head band with decorative bow to the seam at the rear. Attached to the hat under the rear of the headband is a white manufacturers tag with the printed and hand written information "Form: Försterl" (Shape: forest warden), "Farbe: 1073" (Color: 1073" and Qual.:". Faintly printed to the tag is what appears to be the manufacturers name but it is obscured by the printing and writing. The hat is approximately a size 58 (7 1/8 - 7 1/4). The hat has only minor nap wear and usage soiling and is otherwise in very good condition with no repairs and the headband being quite flexible with no evidence of staining.
