N030256 NSKK-OBERSCHARFÜHRER'S BROWN SHIRT. (NSKK Diensthemd)

BACKGROUND: The development of the NSKK, National Sozialistisches Kraftfahr Korps, (National Socialist Motor Corps), can be traced back to 1923 when the SA introduced a Kraftfahr Abteilung, (Motor Section), to transport personnel as required. In 1928 the SA Motor section was expanded to Kraftfahrstaffeln, (Motor Squadrons). In an attempt to create a national motor corps the NSAK, National Sozialistisches Automobil Korps, (National Socialist Automobile Corps), was formed in April 1930 as an NSDAP auxiliary organization subordinate to the SA. In early 1931 Adolf Hühnlein was appointed as Chief of the NSAK and proposed a name change to NSKK, which was officially accepted in April 1931. As an affiliate organization of the NSDAP, personnel serving with the NSKK originally wore the "Tradition Uniform" of the SA Motor Squadron until a specific NSKK service tunic was introduced in 1936.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Very nice example of a pre-1936 NSKK brown shirt. A light tan, cotton twill construction, waist-length service shirt featuring a lay-down collar and five button front closure, with the top and bottom buttons being tan bakelite and the three center buttons being of nickel silvered sheet metal. The shirt has two pleated patch breast pockets with scalloped button-down flaps and buttons identical to those on the front closure. There are three sets of original award loops sewn to the left pocket front. All of the buttons retain the majority of their finish. The darted sleeves have fold-back French cuffs with dual button closures for the removable, and removed, buttons. To the waistband are four darts to both the front and rear and six aluminum, pebbled belt support hooks, all machine stitched into small retaining pockets. To the reverse center of the waistband is a single vertical belt loop. Black wool collar tabs with metal number numerals (M15/M71) and number "1" on the shoulder board button, would identify the original owner as a member of "1st company, Motorsturm 15 of Motorstandarte 71". The single rank tab ID’s him as a rank of Oberscharführer. Collar is completely piped in black rayon. Original shoulder board consisting of alternating, twisted, bright silver/aluminum and black rayon cords with black rayon piping mounted on a black wool base. Handstitched along its upper edge to the left sleeve is a multi-piece red cotton NSDAP member’s armband. The red armband has a circular white cotton field stitched to it with a black cotton tape mobile swastika stitched to that. A couple of the original stitches that are holding the armband on have come loose and will need to be re-tacked. Sewn to the lower left sleeve is a very nice first pattern NSKK drivers diamond. The interior waistband and back shoulder yoke are lined in tan cotton. Complete to the interior are two superb early RZM/SA tags, one to the lower right waist and the other just below the collar. All insignia is original hand stitched to the tunic and 100% untouched. Shirt show typical aging for a garment that is now 70 years old, but is in overall excellent untouched original condition.
