N030058 1939 NSFK ALPINE FLIGHT BADGE. (NSFK Abzeichen)
BACKGROUND: Originally instituted in January of 1932, the NSFK, "Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps" (National-socialist Flying-corps), was soon absorbed into the DLV, "Deutscher Luftsport Verband" (German Air-sports Association). In April of 1937 the NSFK was re-established, and, at the same time, the DLV was disbanded. The NSFK was mainly a voluntary organization, with a small cadre of paid personnel, whose mandate was to train its members in the flying of powered aircraft, gliders, and balloons.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A two-piece, alloy and enamel badge, in the form of a horizontal oval, 2 3/16" wide and 1 5/8" tall. Affixed to the center of its convex obverse is the NSFK emblem, being the figure of Icarus, modeled after a statue to an aviation pioneer in Berlin, but with a mobile swastika to its base. It is set against a blue enameled background, ringed with a yellow enamel border. Within the border, arching along the top, is "Reichswettkämpfe 1939" (National-contests 1939), and "Alpenzielflug" (Alpine-objective-flight) similarly arches beneath. Most of the silver wash to the lettering and the ring’s borders has worn. To the concave reverse of the badge is crimped a horizontal pin-back device, with "Ges. Gesch." ("Gesetzlich Geschützt," or, By-law Protected) embossed above it, and what appears to be "R" and "C," within a vertical diamond with a vertically ribbed background, is embossed beneath it. Moderate soiling may be seen to the reverse, and along the edges of the obverse. All of the enamel work to the obverse has been retained, although most of the silver wash to the NSFK emblem has worn, with the remainder dulled.
