N029858 1939 WORLD STUDENT GAMES BADGE. (Studentenweltspiele Abzeichen)
BACKGROUND: The NSDStB, "National Sozialistische Deutscher Studentenbund" (National Socialist German Students’-league) was originally formed as a semi-autonomous organization in 1926, infiltrating the majority of institutions by 1930, and was under full control of the Nazi Party by 1934.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A two-piece, convex alloy badge with enamel detailing, 1 9/16" in diameter. Its obverse features a golden-colored, spread-winged eagle with a mobile swastika within an elongated diamond in its talons, being the symbol used by the NSDStB. It is set against a dark blue enameled background, enclosed by a ring which is white above the eagle’s wings, and yellow beneath them. To the white portion of the ring is scrolled "Wien-August 1939" (Vienna-August 1939), and to the yellow, "Studentenweltspiele" (Students’-world-games). To its concave reverse is crimped a horizontal pin-back device, beneath which is embossed the manufacturer’s name, "Rud. Schanes," and location, "Wien." Although the reverse has a moderate age patina to it, its obverse retains almost all of its enamel, and its eagle retains the majority of its original gold wash, with significant darkening to its recesses. Light surface scratching is evident throughout.
