N024858 1938 DDAC HOMELAND COMPETITION AWARD PLATTER. (Servierplatte)

BACKGROUND: The DDAC, "Der Deutsche Automobil-Club" (The German Automobile-Club) was instituted in September of 1933 by NSKK "Korpsführer" Adolf Hühnlein as an independent organization that was similar to the American Automobile Association. The club consisted of personnel who owned a car, and who were not members of the NSKK.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A roughly 14" diameter, pewter serving platter, with raised, undulating borders, and within whose roughly 10" diameter, central depression is scored the DDAC symbol, with "Heimatwettbewerb" (Homeland-competition) above, crossed sabers to either side, and "1938" beneath. The symbol is in the form of a vertical oval, within whose quadruple rings is an eagle with down-swept wings, with "D.D.A.C." across its breast, and against whose talons is the dual, circular surround to a mobile swastika. To the center of the platter’s reverse is embossed, within a doubly beaded and decoratively scrolled border, an angel with a balance in one hand, a sword in the other, and to the lower left of which is what appears to be a small deer. Beneath this is stamped, within a vertical oval, "Altenberger" (no doubt the manufacturer’s name) and "Feinzinn" (Fine-pewter). Light to moderate surface scratching is evident throughout, particularly to the reverse, as is light age soiling, with more noticeable darkening along its obverse borders.
