N022657 NAVAL RESERVE OFFICERS’ CIVIL ENSIGN. (Handelsflagge mit dem Eisernen Kreuz) This merchant flag with the Iron Cross, used from 1935 until the end of the war, replaced an earlier flag, used from 1933, which utilized the black-white-red tricolor with an Iron Cross against the black near its hoist edge. The 54" x 31" flag has 18 1/4" diameter white disks sewn against either side of its red background, within each of which are sewn black mobile swastikas. An approximately 6 1/2" square Iron Cross, comprised of black material doubly outlined with white tress, is sewn to a slightly larger red patch to either side of the flag’s "canton." A reinforcing, triangular patch of red material is sewn to either of the flag’s fly corners, and similar, square patches are sewn to the corners of its hoist edge. A band of white is sewn along its hoist edge, creating a 1 3/8" wide tunnel loop, through which is fed a rope, which is formed into loops at either end where it exits. Ink stamped to one side of the tunnel loop is "Handelsflg. 80 x 135." ("Merchant-flag" followed by its dimensions in centimeters) and "LOH" within a rectangle, no doubt indicating the manufacturer. The flag is in overall excellent condition, with no tears or repairs, and only the expected, light age soiling, mostly visible to its white elements. Scarce KM flag.
