N020256 RAD OFFICER’S "W" ASSIGNMENT IDENTIFICATION CUFFTITLE. (Ärmelstreiffen)
BACKGROUND: Introduced in January of 1939, the special lettered cufftitle was worn by RAD personal working on defensive positions in the Siegfried line. The cufftitles were produced in both officer and enlisted versions. The various letters used denoted different regions, (S) Saar, (R) Rhein, (T) Teir, etc, etc. The cufftitle was withdrawn from service sometime after April of 1941.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Nice example of an officer’s "W" enlisted cufftitle. App 1" x 15", machine woven, rayon construction. Silver wire (officers) "W" and stripes on a black field. Machine woven to the top of its rayon base, in silver threads, is "RADJ" within an inverted triangle, "G.& W." beneath it, and "Ges." and "Gesch.," for "Gesetzlich Geschützt" (By-law Protected), to either side of it. Excellent condition.
