N015658 SA PERSONNEL'S GREATCOAT. (Mantel) A full-length, double breasted greatcoat, in green-brown wool, with its collar and lapels faced in medium brown wool. A hook is to one side of the collar, and an eye to its other side. A column of six, 13/16" diameter, convex, pebbled metal buttons are to each front panel, with corresponding buttonholes along either panel’s forward edge. The greatcoat would normally be worn with the top three buttons unbuttoned, with the lapels, as well as the collar, lying flat. To the reverses of each button is stamped an RZM, "Reichszeugmeisterei" (National-materiel-control-office), logo and "M5/249," the manufacturer’s code for Sebnitzer Knopffabrik Jos. Koch of Sebnitz. Diagonal slash pockets, with unbuttoned pocket flaps, are to each hip. The sleeves terminate in turned-back, French cuffs, each sewn at their seam line but otherwise open along their tops. To the reverse, a pleat extends from the waist to the base of the greatcoat, concealing a 22 1/2" vent secured by three brown bakelite buttons. A half-belt extends horizontally from either side of the reverse waistline, where its buttonholed ends are secured with buttons identical to those on the front panel. Slipped unto the upper left sleeve is a 4" tall, red cotton armband, to which is sewn a 3 1/2" diameter white cotton disk within which is a machine woven, black mobile swastika. Light age soiling and wrinkling is evident to the armband. To the interior, the pocket bags, breast panels, upper back and sleeves are lined in brown cotton. A horizontal slash pocket is to the left interior breast, and cotton loops are above the entrance to each sleeve. Ink stamped to the upper back lining, within a horizontal rectangle, is what appears to be "Bekleidungskammer der S.A. Stand. 51" (Clothing-board [of] the S.A. Regiment ("Standarte") 51). Beneath the rectangle is ink stamped "35," and "5/31" is handwritten, in black ink, beneath that. Sewn to the interior collar is a white cotton tag with what must be the original owner’s name handwritten to it. The coat is in overall good condition, with typical, light age soiling and light to moderate nap wear, although a section of one edge of the tail skirt is moderately frayed, and the buttons to the right front panel appear to have been restitched. Roughly a 40" chest.
