N015657 ORG. TODT EM'S SERVICE TUNIC. (Dienstrock)
BACKGROUND:
"Organization Todt" was established in June of 1938 when the Inspector General for Roads, Dr. Fritz Todt, was tasked with the construction of the "West Wall" (also known as the "Siegfried Line"). Under army planning and supervision, the experienced civil engineers and workers provided by civilian contractors to the organization would also make significant contributions in constructing submarine pens, the "Atlantic Wall," and roads, bridges, buildings and field fortifications within Germany and the occupied territories. After the outbreak of war, uniforms and rank insignia were provided, first as a series of armbands, then arm chevrons and shoulder straps, and, finally, arm chevrons and collar patches. Over a million personnel were employed by the OT by May of 1943.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: An olive drab colored wool service or work tunic, whose four-button, single-breasted front closure leads to a lay-down collar and lapels, and which features diagonal slash hip pockets, each with unbuttoned flaps. Each of the 3/4" diameter, convex alloy buttons to the front closure have pebbled, grey-painted obverses, and "P.J.B." is stamped to each of their otherwise featureless, concave reverses. Diamond-shaped collar tabs, in the same color and material as the tunic, are sewn to either side of the collar, each with the "OT" monogram machine embroidered to them, in red. Pinned to the left breast is a moire ribbon bar, copper-colored with white edge stripes, for the "Westwall" medal. Extending from the inside seam line of each cuff is a short, horizontal tab with a buttonhole, which mates with a corresponding, black bakelite dish button. The interior breast panels and back are lined in grey rayon. A horizontal loop, of the same material as the lining, is to the interior collar. A horizontal slash pocket is to each interior breast, beneath the left of which is ink stamped, "Org. Todt" within a horizontal rectangle, with what appears to be "Peter Gehlen" stamped beneath that, and an indistinguishable marking followed by "25" is beneath that. The hip pocket bags are also of grey rayon, as is the small, open-topped field dressing pocket, with a black bakleite dish button and buttonhole, sewn to the interior of the lower right front panel. A horizontal tunnel loop is to the base of the back lining, through which is fed a cotton tie tape, which could be pulled or loosened and then tied to shorter tie tapes sewn near either exit of the loop. The armpits each have semi-circular black reinforcing fabric sewn to them. One very small hole may be seen to the back lining. The wool exterior is lightly nap worn and age soiled, but otherwise appears to have been only very lightly used. Approximately a size 40. Rare tunic to find intact and untouched!
