N015056 BDM/JM JACKET. (BDM/JM Kletterjacke)

BACKGROUND: The BDM, Bund Deutscher Mädel, (League of German Girls), was the female counterpart of the HJ, for girls aged 15-17, and was originally established in December 1928 as the Schwesternschaft der HJ, (Sisterhood of the HJ). In July 1930 the organization was re-designated Bund Deutscher Mädel and in April 1931 the JM, Jungmädelgruppe, (Young Girls Group), for girls aged 10-14, was established as the counterpart of the DJ. On June 1ST 1932 the BDM/JM gained official status as an independent organization of the NSDAP. Uniform regulations were first introduced in 1931 and consisted of a long brown skirt with white collar but it wasn’t until 1933 that BDM/JM uniforms began to become standardized, and on October 10TH 1933 the tan Kletterjacke, (Climbing Jacket), with white blouse and navy blue skirt was introduced.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Light tan colored velour, (imitation suede), construction jacket features a five button front closure with small fold back peak lapels and a lay down collar. Jacket has two, small, non-pleated, patch breast pockets and two, small, non-pleated, patch hip pockets, all with scalloped button down flaps. Straight cut sleeve cuffs have a horizontal, button holed velour strap stitched to the inside seam for fit adjustment. Upper left sleeve has a machine woven HJ diamond emblem correctly hand stitched in place. Diamond consists of red top and bottom quarters with white side quarters and a central canted black swastika. Above the HJ diamond is a "Sud Wurttemberg" BDM/JM district (machine woven) which also has machine stitching to the jacket. Both the diamond and district triangle look to be original period stitching. Reverse of the jacket has two vertical tapering darts and dual horizontal fit adjustment straps to both sides, near waistline with nickel/silver plated, magnetic sheet metal adjustment buckles. Interior of the jacket fully lined in a cream colored linen. Liner also has original owners initials hand stitched in. The front closure buttons are the simulated leather type in molded tan bakelite. Buttons all look to have original stitching. Jacket is roughly a size 26" chest, which would indicate it is most likely a JM item. Jacket shows light to moderate age and usage. Very decent example.
