BACKGROUND: Originally introduced in 1913 as the DRA badge, this was modified in 1933 to the DRL, "Deutschen Reichsbundes für Leibesübungen" (German National-league for Physical-fitness), badge, and again in 1937 with the addition of the swastika. The award was intended as an incentive for physical training, and was issued to both males and females between 18 and 32 years old who met the required criteria for an eight year period, or those between the ages of 32 to 40 who met the criteria over a twelve month period.  

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: An achievement booklet for the "Deutschen Reichsbundes für Leibesübungen" sports award. The 5 5/8" x 8 5/8", off-white colored, card stock cover of the booklet features an embossed image of the award, being an oval oak-leaf wreath with "DRL" in stylized script to its center and a swastika to its base. Nice double inkstamped photo of a soldier in uniform. The third page has a printed image of the award, name and birth date of the recipient, his affiliated organization and its location, and the level, being bronze, silver or gold, of the award. Pages five to eight lists the required qualifications, in five groups, for the award. Page nine defines the general conditions of the award. Page ten explains its regulations. Page eleven lists the addresses of the regional offices of the organization. Pages twelve to fourteen provides spaces for the signed, dated, and stamped checklist of the five levels of accomplishment required to receive the award. The last page provides spaces for the number, name, date, and level of the award, and the signature of an official. The achievement book shows light age soiling to its covers, and the subtle yellowing to the pages one expects in bleached paper, but no other damage.
