N013856 DRK MOUNTED PERSONNEL'S MEDICAL POUCH. (Ärztlichtaschen)

BACKGROUND: The DRK, Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross), a voluntary civil assistance organization, originally instituted in 1864, was officially acknowledged by the Geneva Convention in 1929. In December 1937 it gained status as a legally recognized organization by the NSDAP. As with other essential services in Third Reich Germany it came under control of the NSDAP in late 1938 under the auspices of the Ministry of the Interior’s Social Welfare Organization.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A red brown leather medical pouch, approximately 7" x 8" x 3". Two vertical leather tabs, each wrapped and doubly riveted around metal "D" rings, are to the upper part of its reverse. Its fold-over flap, which proceeds from the reverse, has two leather extensions stitched to its forward edge, each with a stud hole to them. These mate with corresponding steel studs to the front of the body of the pouch. With the fold-over flap released, the pouch opens at a ninety degree angle, exposing its contents. Collapsing, triangular leather flaps connect the back of the pouch to its extended front, and there is a folding alloy hinge alongside the right one. Interior compartment is separated into two different sections. Impressed to the pouch body, is "D.R.K. Sanitätslager," "Babelsberg," and "19." Nice clean untouched example.
