N013556 DUTCH WHW/WHN DONATION CAN. (Schenkungbüchse)

BACKGROUND: The WHW, Winterhilfswerk, (Winter Relief Works), was an annual charitable donation event held by the NS-Volkswohlfahrt, (NS-People’s Social Welfare), the official NSDAP private charity organization. During the annual one day event personnel from all the varied NSDAP organizations, along with popular theater and screen stars, would solicit donations from the public and reward contributors with a wide variety of lapel badges. The public donations were collected in specially produced donation cans which were turned in to the appropriate WHW office for distribution to needy personnel. Although there was rampant corruption in most NSDAP organizations the WHW was a great success, with roughly ten million people receiving benefits in 1937 alone.
