N011658 NSFK SHOOTING AWARD MEDALLION. (Medaille)

BACKGROUND: Originally instituted in January of 1932, the NSFK, "Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps" (National-socialist Flying-corps), was soon absorbed into the DLV, "Deutscher Luftsport Verband" (German Air-sports Association). In April of 1937 the NSFK was re-established, and, at the same time, the DLV was disbanded. The NSFK was mainly a voluntary organization, with a small cadre of paid personnel, whose mandate was to train its members in the flying of powered aircraft, gliders, and balloons.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A 3 3/16" diameter, cast alloy "table medallion," to whose center is embossed the NSFK emblem, in the form of the figure of Icarus, modeled after a statue to an aviation pioneer in Berlin, but with a mobile swastika to its base, and "NSFK" against a scroll arching above it. Above the scroll is an "8.-10. 4. 1939" date, and, arching along the top of the medallion, "Korpsschießen des NS-Fliegerkorps" (Corps-shooting of-the NS - Flying-corps), with "Bad Kissingen," the location, similarly arching beneath. To its reverse is a low relief image of uniformed, armed and field-equipped NSFK men advancing through a grassy field with a line of trees in the distant background. Very light age soiling is evident throughout, mostly to its recesses.
