BACKGROUND: The DRA, "Deutsches Reichssportabzeichen" (German National-sport-badge), established the RJA, "Reichsjugendsportabzeichen" (National-youth-sport-badge) in 1925 for children under the age of 18. Awarded only in silver, it was extended to females in 1928, and a swastika was added to the badge in 1937. The award was discontinued in 1942.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A silver-washed lapel pin in the form of a 5/8" diameter oak leaf wreath with a mobile swastika to its base, encircling the stylized letters "RJA" upon a plain, convex background. To its reverse is embossed the manufacturer’s name and location, "Wernstein Jena," beneath which is soldered a 2 5/16" tall rifled pin. Almost all of its original silver wash appears to have been retained, and is still bright to the reverse, although it is age soiled and darkened to the recesses of the obverse.
