N003059 DJ UNIT PENNANT. (Wimpel)

BACKGROUND: The DJ, "Deutsche Jungvolk" (German Youth), originated in Vienna, Austria in 1929, and was eventually to become the young branch of the HJ; for boys from 10 to 14 years old. The "Sig" rune first became associated with the DJ on November 9th, 1929, the sixth anniversary of the failed Beer Hall Putsch, when the Gauleiter of Vienna presented them with their first official flag, consisting of a black field with a central, silver "Sig" rune. It was afterward adopted as the official emblem of the DJ.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A multi-piece cotton construction pennant, whose hoist edge is 62cm tall, and which terminates at the other end in partial "swallow’s-tails," the uppermost being 150cm long, with that underneath it being 55cm in length. The hoist edge is reinforced with a three extra rows of stitching. Both original attachment clips are present on the bunting end. To one face (with black backing) is sewn a 45cm tall "Sig" rune, in white. The other side of the pennant has a grey backing with a large hand embroidered hand clutching a sword. To the upper right hand side are embroidered the unit numbers "5/IV/2/59" with location "Grabstede" just below that. Embroidered in grey and gold lettering is "Fähnlein Mackensen" which would most probably be an honor title for that unit. Flag shows typical age soiling and period use. Nice untouched, hard to find example.
