N001660 1938 NSFK NIGHT FLIGHT BADGE. (NSFK Abzeichen)
BACKGROUND: Originally instituted in January of 1932, the NSFK, "Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps" (National-socialist Flying-corps), was soon absorbed into the DLV, "Deutscher Luftsport Verband" (German Air-sports Association). In April of 1937 the NSFK was re-established, and, at the same time, the DLV was disbanded. The NSFK was mainly a voluntary organization, with a small cadre of paid personnel, whose mandate was to train its members in the flying of powered aircraft, gliders, and balloons.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A two-piece, alloy and enamel badge, in the form of a horizontal oval, 53mm wide and 39mm tall. Affixed to the center of its convex obverse is the NSFK emblem, being the figure of Icarus, modeled after a statue to an aviation pioneer in Berlin, but with a mobile swastika to its base. It is set against a blue enameled background. All of that is enclosed by a ring, within which "Reichsflugwettbewerb 1938" (National-flying-competition 1938) arches above the image, and "Bodenleitstelle Berlin" (Ground control station Berlin) similarly arches beneath it. To the concave reverse of the badge is crimped a horizontal pin-back device. Nicely maker marked to "ROB. NEFF BERLIN W57". Nice example.
